I spoke w/ 2 galleries and told them it was OK to hand out my card for special orders with the explanation to the client that the acceptance of the order depends on my time constraints.

This leaves me free from any % going to gallery, they aren't selling my pieces, just giving my name if asked. I also have the freedom to accept or not depending on time or if I have available materials...don't have to tie up thounds of dollars in stock.

So, thanks to everyone who responded and helped me make this difficult decision. I think it's now a win/win.

Re: UPDATE: OUT OF RETIREMENT

@Shanus I think it sounds like you made the best decision..I like how you put yourself in complete control so you can enjoy retirement but if timing is right pop out for a minute.

@Shanus LOL, that's one retirement that didn't last long.  I kind of got the feeling you were at loose ends, not quite knowing what to do with yourself.  This solution is perfect and will allow you to ease into retirement gradually.  It takes practice.  I've actually known people who retired from other jobs so they could do silversmithing.

I wish there was some way to contact you.  I've got some nice Royston turquoise stones I'd love to have made into something.  I bought them from the miners themselves.

@Shanus

Sounds like you created the right amount of freedom and flexibility for yourself.   Yay for Shanus!   Woman LOL

The only thing that comes to mind is how likely are galleries going to promote you if there's no chance of any profit for them?    Do they already have a few pieces of yours for sale?

Re: UPDATE: OUT OF RETIREMENT

Hello @Tinkrbl44. The galleries don't get any profit from giving my card/name to a customer. They do, however develop a good relationship and possibly a future sale. Afterall, the person came in the gallery to look around. If someone sees my jewelry's not in the cases, if the sales person is worth their salt, she'll offer to show them something similar by another artist. It does not bother me at all if they purchase something else....If I had my jewelry in the cases for sale, I'd be back where I was before "retirement".

Re: UPDATE: OUT OF RETIREMENT

@SeaMaiden. Working on getting pics of my jewelry on here as soon as I can. Already photographed a few pieces and some of the loose stones I purchased over the weekend at the Bead Show.
