Re: Taxes on items ordered thru mail

I always order on line and the only one who does not charge me tax is Shop. Even Amzn now charges tax - but not on all orders - the CP orders are not charged tax!! Go figure!!

You're right Amazon now charges tax on what they ship. If the vendor ships I doubt they will...I would rather they collected the tax so I don't have to keep track and do it at the end of the year.

I feel like muddying the waters. No one on Ebay charges me tax except those in my own state.

Since sales taxes are STATE law, you need to check within your own state. The Forum info may not be accurate.

I know, for example, that for a very long time I read here that Zappos never charged tax or shipping. How surprised was I when for my first order, I saw a tax line before I clicked submit. Of course, Zappos being a responsible company was following the laws of my STATE.

Re: Taxes on items ordered thru mail

Some States doe and some don't - it is confusing. I believe all States want their tax dues but smaller companies that sell via mail seem to operate under the radar. I just ordered from a QVC vendor's website and was thrilled to get free S/H and NO TAX.

In my State - IF the seller doesn't collect the tax - we are 'suppose' to own up to the unpaid State tax and add it to our income on our April Income Tax Form.

How many people to you think really do this? (not I) LOL

It doesn't matter if you are charged tax on your online order. If you aren't your supposed to include it on your state taxes. That why they are trying to make sure online retailers charge because no one includes it on their taxes. For me if a brick and mortar store has to charge you tax then a online retailer should also.

Re: Taxes on items ordered thru mail

A couple of years ago my state legislature passed a bill making online companies, including those out of state, charge tax to our state's customers. The tax collected from us goes back to our state. We now have to pay tax on anything we buy from online/mail order companies including Amazon. The state was losing too much sales tax revenue with online shopping. Not all states require this.

My order was from Helzberg jewelers and last Dec. they didn't charge me tax. Last week they charged me tax, even tho there is no presence of Helzberg in my state. They told me the law was passed in the last 3 months. I questioned that Amazon is still not charging me tax and Helzbergs said that is because Amazon is paying the taxes themselves for us so their prices don't go up. Something sounds weird to me. Helzberg is a big company.

Mia- I don't think Helzberg is so big compared to Amazon, is it?

And I also don't know for sure, but that could be true about Amazon and the tax thing. Some of their investors have been watching their business model very carefully lately because as huge as it is Amazon isn't making much of a profit - they put their money back into the business which sounds good until you read further into the report and see the investors saying, they've got to raise prices soon to satisfy the money people.

Maybe the 20% increase in Prime is only step one?
