Of those two choices, I'd definitely go for the gold. I don't care for costume. Last time I tried wearing silver earrings I had sore ears for a while. Then it tarnishes, turns your skin green or black - just not pleasant. Go for the fine metals.
Or, if you cannot buy gold or platinum (much nicer even than gold!) stainless steel is very nice. It's way nicer than silver, doesn't tarnish, wears better, and is prettier.
But the only problem with the white gold I see on shopping channels is that it's usually rhodium plated over gold so it looks cheap. I would not consider anything fine jewelry if it is one thing plated/bonded/vermeil/whatever (it's all the same) over another.
So, if you can get good quality white gold, like many years ago, it's worth it.

As much as I love the white metals, if you put pieces of Sterling, White Gold, Platinum and Stainless out in front of me, I'm not sure I could tell you which is which. Maybe I could, but I've never tried.
