Re: Roman Glass pieces--water damages them?

I have a beautiful brooch made with Roman glass, and I was warned at time of purchase never to allow it to get wet. Water will darken the glass, and it will lose its shine and iridescence. I think this material would be a poor choice for a ring or bracelet that is likely to get wet with hand-washing, etc.

My brooch has held up very well over 20 years or so and still has lovely iridescence, and I love the idea of jewelry made from ancient glass. Very beautiful and very different. Perhaps a brooch or necklace that would get minimal handling might be the best use for Roman glass.

I have earrings and a large pendant which I've had for several years and they're fine but I'd never buy a ring which runs the risk of getting wet. I'm very careful with the pieces I do have.

Serenity, is your friend wearing rings during her shift? Some hospitals frown on it because you can't wash well under them. Anyway, glass, even if it didn't have an applied (glued back on) patina, isn't a good choice since it is fragile to start with. Pearls, coral, and turquoise are also a bad choice for someone who washes their hands constantly. The best options would either be metal only, or metal set with a harder semi-precious stone or CZ. Amethyst, topaz, synthetic opal would all be good options.

Re: Roman Glass pieces--water damages them?

Ladies, about 20 years ago I saw my first pieces of Roman Glass in a boutique in NY and fell in love with the colors and design. I have not had ANY problems with these pieces but I got a pair of earrings and a necklace on an 18" chain. The pieces were delicate and never got them wet.....never got a ring or bracelet, but it looks as good today as 20 years ago. I think it's like pearls or any good jewelry. I take good care of my jewelry and since pearls are probably my favorites, I have never washed my hands with a pearl ring. I wear my jewelry when I go out but as soon as I come home and cook or clean, off it comes and I put them away. I think if you just take good care of your pieces and either don't have a job where you're rough on jewelry (I used a computer a lot on my job) but always took the good rings off to wash my hands. I was told when I bought the Roman glass not to handle it as you don't want to get oil from your skin on it. It was great to choose the pieces because I got beautiful colors in mine and they look the same today as 20 years ago. Just don't handle them! I have RLM silver from quite a while ago and love to touch that jewelry, but it's made to be touched and doesn't damage. The Roman glass is NOT that fragile! Just don't play with it or handle the glass when wearing it.

Re: Roman Glass pieces--water damages them?

I have two Roman Glass rings. One is from Or Paz and the other is from another shopping channel. I've had both pieces for about 2 years and they still look as beautiful as the day I received them.

I'm very careful while wearing my jewelry. I don't clean the house while wearing it, wear it to the beach or pool etc. I apply hand cream and then put my rings on.

I always remove my jewelry before washing my hands; that goes for gold, silver, gemstones, diamonds......the whole shebang. Honestly, I never heard about not getting Roman Glass jewelry wet - that's good to know even if I never wash my hands while wearing jewelry. And I never heard about not handling it too much - also good to know, even though I've handled both rings a lot.

As I said, I've owned my rings for 2 years and so far, so good. The color still looks the same and I've never had any flaking.

Re: Roman Glass pieces--water damages them?

I would never buy a Roman Glass ring, and I'm not a nurse. I don't really understand why anyone would make rings out of this substance. That said, I really do like Roman Glass, and have two pairs of earrings, one from Or Paz, one purchased in a shop that sold Israeli jewelry. So far, both pairs have held up nicely. However, I have lately heard that what is being sold now (on Q) is not as good as in the past, and that there seems to be more flaking, even in earrings.

I still think that if you want to give this as a gift, earrings would be your best option. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Roman Glass pieces--water damages them?

I just received J317753 which were advanced order roman glass earrings....ordered two months ago.

After reading this thread and the reviews I have packaged them for return. I am always touching my earrings.....just a habit so don't want to take a chance on them losing their beauty.

Also, if anyone know how to post a pic of QVC items (I wanted to post a pic of the earrings) could you let me know how. I used to know but tried and could not do it.

Thanks.

For QVC items, sure. But outside of QVC, the url should be used. Of course people can (if they don't honor copyrights) copy and paste (hotlinking), but not recommended especially if the person(s) likes credit for their picture/photo.

I wouldn't worry about Roman glass earrings even if you touch them. They should be okay, fingers aren't very oily unless you touch your face first.
