Possibly her only daughter. Kate is not gonna need it. If I was Kate I 'd wear Di's ring for fancy occasions and buy myself a proper diamond wedding ring. Just me, diamonds or nothing.
Rubies, sapphires and such are dinner rings not meant for engagement/wedding rings.
I know all the young are going for semi-precious stones, but, probably a matter of economy more then tradition.

I heard that most European people used colored gemstones and not diamonds for their wedding sets.
