Problem with Barbara Bixby gold

I just posted this in a thread for the Bixby vine ring.  Italianlady posted a review of the ring in  which she said the gold on her new vine ring scratched after about a week of wearing it.  She said the gold was only a thin coating and underneath was silver.  I have heard Bixby state on air a few times that the gold she applies to her silver jewelry is solid gold not a thin coating.  I just bought 3 of these rings.  So what's going on?  Are we being duped?  Did I hear incorrectly what Bixby said?  Anyone who knows about her jewelry, any input would be greatly appreciated.  I have many of her pieces other than rings, so haven't had any scratches, so never realized it was only a gold coating.

Re: Problem with Barbara Bixby gold

I have many  BBixby rings from when QVC was young and BB was new to the Q. They were quite expensive and now when I look at them in my jewlery box the gold has turned black. I did mention this a few yrs ago but noone believed me...lol.... They look awful and cleaning doesn't help. Truthfully I hardly ever wore them ,I am a saver type person ...lol...I save everything for a special occ. that somehow never happens.  Anyway they all have turned black, necklaces, earrings, rings ,everything.

I have to say that the jewlery line from Ann King has lasted like new for me and get better with age.. Her braclets are the one thing I have worn for many years and NEVER take off for any reason. Her Gold has NOT worn off at all and everything still looks as good as the day I bought it many, many yrs ago.

I wear them along with RLM bracelets that look better and better as the yrs go on.

Sadly no more Ann King or RLM it seems

@mia 2  This is disturbing to me.  I always thought it was solid 18kt gold.  I thought if it was just a thin film it would have to be labeled as gold plating or something like that.

I've never gotten a scratch on any of the pieces of hers that I have, and everything still looks nice.

I have a pair of her earrings and the gold part must be very thin and hollow since it collapsed and is all dented.  That was the end of ever buying her things again.

@mia 2  There's a Barbara Bixby forum on Delphi.  If I'm remembering correctly, there's a forum where you can ask Barbara questions.  I haven't been there in a long time, but I think it's still an active forum.

Re: Problem with Barbara Bixby gold

Thanks all for your responses so far.  This is disturbing as I have bought many of her pieces over the years thinking they would hold up well and were not coated with a thin coat of gold.  Good to hear from you NickNack.  Thanks for the Delphi suggestion.  I am already a part of that group but haven't been on for 2 years.  I think I will check this out on Delphi to see if I can  get some input. Will let you know if I learn anything.  ANYONE else who has some input on this topic, we'd love to hear from you!

Re: Problem with Barbara Bixby gold

I own four of the vine rings and have had NO issues with the gold scratching or tarnishing.  If you look at the ring from the side you can see that the leaves are a separate piece and they lay on top of the silver.

I posted this question on Delphi Forums, and one of the respondants replied that it is a thin separate coating of gold which is applied over a silver base...  not painted on but applied over silver.  If that's the case, I surely am surprised.   Waiting for any other responses on Delphi.

You can tell by looking at them they masked off the silver and gold plated the gold leaves or other gold area's. These were not seperatly cast and then attached. No one paints 18k on jewelry.

I own a large collection of Barbara's jewelry and I can assure you that the gold is not plated, you can see the separate pieces of gold that are attached separately to the silver.  I have several of the vine and leaf rings from years ago and the new iolite ring, they are all made the same.  The older rings have held up very well.
