I heard this on NPR yesterday and thought it was so fascinating I wanted to tell other people who fight the same "should I or shouldn't I battle." The nutshell version is this - I always thought that when I resisted the temptation of buying something I saw and wanted, I was making myself stronger, gold star for me. But actually, the "science" shows something different. The link to the transcripted broadcast below indicates that when we use our energy repeatedly to use our willpower against doing something (be it eating that piece of chocolate cake or buying the necklace we know we really can't afford), we are depleting reserves of energy that are then unavailable for other, maybe more important activities.
