I change my sterling silver leverbacks to stainless steel. I buy stainless leverbacks from eBay.

@SilleeMee Do you do it yourself or go to a jeweler?  I have been thinking about doing my own fixes on a necklace.  Jewelry repairs can be expensive, and I don't always trust the jewelers.  My mother once found out her stones were replaced with fake ones.

I can't wear silver either. It makes my ears, neck, fingers sore and bloody. I'll stick with the gold I bought years ago.

Speaking from similar experiences, sterling silver isn't the problem.  It's the nickel that is irritating you.

My solutions are a few coats of clear nail polish ... or QVC's Ultrafine silver line.

I'm a white metal gal .... silver, steel, white gold and platinum.   No yellow metals for me.

I change out the findings on my earrings alot--I have a set of jewelry making tools that have the right type of pliers needed.  got them cheap on AMZ.

@wagirl  Do you just crimp the metal with the pliers or do you do soldering as well?

@NYCLatinaMe

No. The leverbacks have a split ring which is sturdy b/c it's stainless steel. No need to solder unless you want to.

Re: Need help with irritating earrings

I have the same problem with earring backings.  Cannot wear 14k or any other backings. I break out.   I try to buy lever backs but when I want to wear my Diamond Stud earrings I have a problem.  May I suggest Silicone earring backings.  I have used them  & they are awesome.  I found them on Amazon & you can buy a whole box of them for $4.99.  They stay on & I don't break out from them.  Easy to put on & take off to clean my earrings too!

The nail polish never helped with my ears. darn.

My favorite is rose gold but I do wear yellow sometimes and occasionally white gold.

Re: Need help with irritating earrings

@NYCLatinaMe --OH no -- I am not a maker a all--wish I were---no I just open up the jump rings with pliers-- and remove the dangle part--if it is too long or I don't like the finding itself and then twist them back together. I'm not a fan of long earrings, and not a fan of lever back findings either. I like the fish hooks with the ball on the end of them. Sometimes I can make a long earring into 2 , almost like a charm earring--my DD is a maker tho--so she can help out and show me.

Re: Need help with irritating earrings

I happen to have Benadryl in the house, so I'm trying that.  If it doesn't work I will pay a jeweler to change the findings.  That's how much I love these earrings.  I am beyond klutzy with my hands.
