I believe those buns are called 'squash blossom whirls' and they are worn in celebration of the winter solstice. The maidens are single young women and display that squash blossom hair style as a symbol of fertility to promote healthy crops and soil. The kachinas are guardians of the land and of the people.

I LOVE IT!  So pretty. All I have worn my entire life is silver, turq and coral! I am a sucker for a "pretty face"....... Happy Holidays
