Re: Make That Sterling SHINE!!!

Who knew they were bottling this up in the 1800s 🤣  Bad news then and still bad news.  If you need to put on gloves to protect your skin.....

Much too toxic.

I have some old pieces, like an old belt, and have respect for the workmanship.

Just NO

Super Washing Soda can be used with special cleaning plates, such as QWICKSILVER®, SilverLion and Speedy Plate to remove tarnish from silver, silver plate, jewelry, gold, copper, bronze, stainless steel and most brass. Instead of these plates, which are just pieces of aluminum, use your own aluminum foil.

Safely clean Silver with no Scrubbing Needed

• Place a sliver plate at the bottom of a plastic or glass bin
• Add 2 tablespoons of ARM & HAMMER™ Super Washing Soda
• Carefully pour in 2 cups of hot water
• Carefully add the item to the mixture and wait 5 seconds

Use gloves when placing items into the mixture and rinse thoroughly when finished.

SAME METHOD AS BEFORE BUT WITH LESS WASHING SODA AND WATER THATS NOT AS HOT. WORKS GREAT TOO.

I ave done this before and compared it to silver polish with a rag.

This method was very "gray" looking but better.  The white shine was achieved with the rubbing and silver polish.

Also, before using any cleaner designed to clean sterling silver, make sure that your sterling silver jewelry is not plated with rhodium or platinum.

🤗  Dawn dishwashing liquid, warm water, and a child's soft toothbrush works fine for me. I finish with a polishing cloth when necessary.

Re: Make That Sterling SHINE!!!

I use Sunshine cloths on my sterling jewelry.  It preserves the oxidation I want to keep and does an amazing job at removing the gunk I want to remove.  I tried these out on the recommendation of @Kachina624 and appreciate her input.

If my dog doesn't like you, neither do I.

QVC used to sell the Speedy Plate, wish I'd thought about using aluminum foil before I bought the Speedy Plate!

This method DOES work!

This is too toxic for me.  I like using dawn dish soap and a cleaning cloth.  My jewelry sparkles beautifully.

Yes I completely agree.  This is the same method I use and it works.  I had a friend who ruined her expensive David Yurman silver necklace by using silver cleaner fluid on it!

Re: Make That Sterling SHINE!!!

I would never use Tarnex or the soda and foil method on good silver flatware or jewelry.  Too many reputable antique dealers and jewelry stores have told me this.

Use a top brand silver polish or cream such as Hagerty, Wrights, etc. and soft cloths only.  It's easy to ruin jewelry, flatware or coins and take away the tarnish in the design needed for the beauty of the piece and decrease it's value with stuff like this.

Read before you polish.  There are things you can spot clean a bad place with, but please know what you're doing before you devalue some expensive pieces.  It's easy to do.
