I am not a gemologist - when Jay King said the necklace was black agate as a buyer "I trusted him". The high end jeweler in my area that looked at my necklace was the "OWNER" of the store that has been in business for over 25 years and NOT some "minimum wage worker".

I was ripped off pure and simple !

Did you tell this person where you purchased the item before you had them look at it or is it marked as a Jay King item?

I ask because many years ago I had an experience. I took a piece I had purchased from QVC in to my local jeweler to have it appraised just to see if it the Q's suggested retail price was close. This was a well thought of store in my area, owned by a husband and wife. Hubby was in when I went in and told him I had bought it from QVC. He looked at it and told me it was junk, that these "shopping channels" all sell junk real jewelers would never sell. Hmmmm. I kept the item anyway because I thought it was beautiful.

I was wearing the necklace when I went in that store a few weeks later and the wife was in that day, not the hubby. She commented on my necklace so I took it off and gave it to her to look at and asked her if she'd appraise it for me. She checked it out and told me it was a well done piece and her estimate was very close to what QVC had said the retail value was.

A lot of local jewelers do not like companies such as QVC and HSN. They are cutting into their profits and sales are going downhill.Of course they are going to "bad" mouth the competition.

kachina, that necklace looks really pretty and high quality! Enjoy it! I missed this one! I do like to watch Jay when he is on as I find his stories quite interesting. However, I find it's hit or miss with his jewelry. I return probably 4 out 5 items I may purchase from him. They look so pretty on television and some are quite unique, but most of his things don't look the same once you get them home. The color is off, the settings are cheap, etc. This doesn't mean I won't watch or order because there is always that one piece that is really nice! With all this said, he has nothing over Carolyn Pollack's quality of jewelry. He may have some unique designs but the quality is not there on many of his items. I know that he is more contemporary and not as much southwestern as Carolyn's line.

Jojo, the ongoing problem with Jay's jewelry is that they pick the best from a huge lot, to show on TV. What we actually receive is often a far cry from the TV sample. I order two pairs of his #8 Mine earrings hoping to get one decent pair to go with a ring I have from that mine. Neither pair bore any resemblance to the sample or to what typically comes from that mine. About 1/3 of the things I get from him arrive damaged. I have taken things to his shop here in Albuquerque and they're very nice about fixing them.
