Re: Help me solve a silver chain mystery, please.

I use the Precious liquid jewelry cleaner that I got here on Q. Works GREAT! I've used it on silver so tarnished that it is black and one minute later bright and shiny. The best silver cleaner I've ever used.

Tarnex is for flatware and should not be used on jewelry.

Emmy, try Connoisseurs Jewelry Dip made specifically for Silver jewelry, not the Precious or the Delicate versions of their dips. Works in a flash on tarnished sterling silver, in and out of the dip and then rinse, don't let the item sit in the dip for any length of time or it may discolor. You should be able to find it at a big box store.

It sounds like the metal underneath is tarnishing. I am with those that say to dip and rinse. Wal-Mart sells Connoisseurs and it works in a flash.

DO NOT soak, just dip and rinse immediately.

Sounds like silver plate with tarnish. Return!

I just thought of something. I have some items from China marked 925 and I swear they are not silver. Perhaps TJ Maxx got ahold of some of this bogus stuff.

Are you sure that not gold over sterling?

"925 Milor refers to plated gold over sterling silver made by a jewellery company called Milor based in Milan, Italy. 925 indicates that the percentage of silver or gold in the bracelet is 92.5 percent. Milor specialises in sterling, gold and also stainless steel jewellery.

This is what I was thinking, I have some sterling with gold overlay necklaces that look a little gold, but not a true gold if you know what I mean.

Re: Help me solve a silver chain mystery, please.

First, thank you everyone with all your suggestions. The weird thing is though when I bought the chains they were beautiful sterling silver. Now they are beautiful gold color, really a good match with my other gold chains. I have tried tarnex and silver polish and while they clean the chain there is no dirt on my hands like when you clean a dirty piece of silver. I just never saw this happen before. Comments??

Re: Help me solve a silver chain mystery, please.

Are the chains smooth and flat or do they have a texture - sometimes known as glitter chains? I have one from TJs that had a slight gold cast to it when purchased. I left it alone because I like the way it looks. You can try the silver cleaners but TarneX is very harsh. I use the tin foil/soda/boiling water method to clean silver.

You could return or exchange the chains. If you have the tags they will issue store credit in the full amount.

Sterling often is plated with rhodium, and that does give it a brighter look. That might be a part of the mystery.
