My engagement ring contained the (minute)  stone from his grandmother's engagement ring.  The original setting was masculine and the ring a size 9. She was livid when my husband told her he was having the stone reset . Every time she saw me, she asked how her diamond was. Drove me crazy.  I  would have preferred not having a ring.

Eventually the ring  (and numerous other items) was (were) stolen.

I think I would have handed it back to her the first time she asked how "her" diamond was!

For their 35th wedding anniversary, my dad had a ring made for my mother that combined the diamonds from her engagement ring, my grandmother's engagement ring, and a watch that belonged to my great-grandma. The ring came to me when my mother died, and I treasure it because of the family history associated with it. Don't know who the ring will pass to when I go, as I never had kids.
