I may be the last living person to learn this -- but I never knew you are risking your gold jewelry if you wear it while swimming in chlorinated pools or if you get laundry bleach on it. My daughter learned this painful lesson when she lost the stone in her wedding ring and noticed damage to some of the intricate goldwork on the band. She had to have the stone replaced and the ring repaired, and the jeweler told her about the effects of chlorine on gold -- weakening the metal, damaging its surface, causing prongs to weaken and/or break, etc. I Googled it, and it's absolutely true. It seems white gold is particularly susceptible to chlorine damage.
Thankfully I don't regularly wear my gold rings in the pool, but I'll never wear them there again. Glad I learned this! Wanted to share.
