Here is our friend in a video showing how she knots using her hands. I hope you enjoy it. I use another technique, but this is a good tool to know how to do.

Many of the ladies on this forum are using South sea white, goldens and Tahitians. They won't advise you to do something that will harm your pearls. I hope you have fun.

I checked out your friend's etsy site for the cord--definitely affordable to gather up a supply of colors and sizes. I'll have to check out the different cord that I have here and look at my pearls to get an idea of size needed.
I'm excited now--getting rid of the wire will definitely make my specific strand of pearls more wearable. Plus, it worried me that they would all fall if it broke!
ETA-- Thanks, EG! Just saw your second post--I'm off to check out web links!

Some use wire, but it can cause the pearls to rub against each other and cause damage. Also wire has a tendency to make the drill holes widen or saw into the bead or nacre.(If you are like many of us, you unknowingly handle your necklace during wear and they roll as you wear them on the neckline) Knots in silk create a buffer from damage and silk is soft. That is why the Japanese have used it for a hundred years on beautiful akoya's which have a MOP bead and a thin layer of nacre that is easily damaged.

Beware, that wire WILL break. It can develop a weak spot where is is constantly bent or stressed. Ask me how I know this.....
Also, check out the Pearl Guide forum. Lots of info there!!
There is no reason, except economics, that those pearls were strung on wire and not silk or another stringing material. Either learn to do it yourself, or have them restrung!!

Oh no! Broken wire... I hope you didn't lose anything irreplaceable!
When I heard in the presentation of the TSV that they were strung on wire I thought "Hmm, that sounds odd but what do I know--maybe it's the new thing?!".

Thanks everyone for you responses, and EG for being very generous with your help.
I've learned a lot (pearlguide.com is great). Now all I have to do today is find someone else to do all the chores so I can play around with beads and string!

I finally had a chance to look at the pearls under my magnifying lens. The wire is actually a thin cable (several wires twisted together). The cable is much stronger than just a simple wire (think David Yurman or Charriol wire jewelry or even the cable cars in San Fran!). Still, pearls on wire don't really seem to make much sense as there is no buffer between the pearls. I LOVE the notion of colored cord (silk or synthetic) with pearls. I've never seen that used before. I also saw a really cool stringing a friend recently had done with her tahitians....she has larger baroques strung with teeny tiny round pearls in between. It made a beautiful necklace with the smaller pearls (which were no more than 2 or 3 mm) acting as spacers for the larger baroque shapes.
