Do you consider laboradite a gem?

After seeing so many QVC shows about this particular particle I went to a rock shop to see some, it doesnt look like a gem to me. Is there a difference between a gem and a rock? I do like it, but are we just being sold rocks, because the stuff is pretty cheap.
