Of course be careful with everything but keep in mind the scale is 1-10, so onyx is pretty good, talc is 3 or 4; diamond is at 10.

Most all opaque stones like onyx, lapis and malachite are treated with dye, waxes and polish. They shouldn't be exposed to water or chemicals b/c that can cause the dye to bleed out.
