Opal is my birthstone and I was never crazy about it, but did buy an Australian opal princess type ring with blue sapphire surrounding the opal, it's in a gold setting. I have not worn it much over the years, it must be 30 years old, but I must say it is a pretty ring and I do get compliments on it.

I love opals especially the Ethiopian opals. I dont have alot but have the white opals----so-so in any flash of color, not a fan; the blue opals that are fantastic and then a black opal that is lovely. Am wondering if the E opals are the same as jelly opals----maybe that is what the E's were called before. I do have some fire opals too, in a various colors of orange and a deep yellow--they are nice too.

I'm certainly no expert here, but opals seem like a stone you'd have to buy in person to get a good one.  They don't seem to photograph well enough to make a good judgment about the true beauty of the stone.

Exactly right. If i hadn't seen it live, I would never have considered it. It's just so GORGEOUS; I can't get over it. Sorry; don't mean to gush. Cat Happy

Australian opals are so beautiful.

Very sad to read they're not being mined now.

I've always loved them!  They seems mystical to me.  Some opals are kind of white and lifeless though, while others have fire and seem to have many different colors just shooting from within them!

I was at a store the other day and the woman that checked me out, had the most gorgeous opal ring on.  I couldn't stop looking at it.  The opal stone was oval in shape and fairly sizeable and there was a single small round diamond on either side of it, and the metal was white gold or platinum.  It was so lovely --- I wanted it!!!!

I have a couple small opals -- a ring and earrings.  I always wanted more.  My mother told me once that it is bad luck to purchase them for yourself.  Had anyone ever heard that old tale?

Any way, I think opals are a very versatile and unique stone.  They are, however, somewhat fragile.

My birthstone is opal.

I've read that opals are considered the luckiest birthstone because they contain all the colors of the other birthstones.

I've also read that it's bad luck to wear an opal if it's not your birthstone. I never heard anything about bad luck if you purchase them for yourself.
