In principle, I was raised to believe that doublets are cheap and inferior

I love the idea of cute little Ennui1 at her mother's knee ...

{#emotions_dlg.laugh} that is pretty funny, but I'm with ennui on the value of doublets.

I've never bought a doublet in my life. I didn't consider it one way or the other with this bracelet. I just like the style and I probably would have bought it if the stone were coal.

If you doubt the value of the TSV, go to HSN and look at similar bracelets. I found one set with small Larimar stones, not an expensive stone, for $450. It had no more silver than Carolyn's bracelet. There others set with inexpensive stones for $340, and $370, respectively. I think the silver work on the CP bracelet is superior to any of those. If this bracelet had Ripka's name on it, we would have to mortgage the farm to buy it. If you haven't received it yet, trust me, it's very substantial.

It's a little freaky how much that Larimar bracelet looks like the TSV (HSN 321-439).

I'm sure doublets are used to keep the price down.

I posted on another thread that an old Ripka bracelet of mine weighs in at 79 grams. I'm not happy about defending Ripka, but fair is fair.

The doublets on QVC are used to make a less-expensive stone appear more valuable and exotic.

In principle, I was raised to believe that doublets are cheap and inferior and I refuse to buy them. If the CP cuff were made with traditional, single stones, I might have been interested. I don't know why TPTB thought lapis and turquoise and MOP needed a crystal top.

Fragile stones, like opal, are often made with an onyx backing to provide strength and stability, but better opals are standalone.

YMMV.

In the case of this particular piece I would have to argue your point on doublets being used to cover up "inferior" and cheap stones. CPJ has ALWAYS been known for their superior quality stones most especially their lapis. In fact I would have to say that the use of the faceted crystal quartz is most definitely used to enhance the look of this particular design. After all MOP is not an expensive stone so I certainly wouldn't think that CPJ was trying to cover up an inferior stone of any kind. The reviews of the TSV are absolutely phenomenal. You should give it a try! I think you would be pleasantly surprised!

Well said...lala!!!! The TSV is perfection!

I've never bought a doublet, either, and for all the same reasons everyone has stated. Agree that the Pollack bracelet is a stunner and reasonably priced. Since it simply isn't my taste, I won't buy it, but can easily appreciate how others would grab it up.

This has been an interesting discusion for me. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me, ladies.
