Here, in WA state if you ask at the mall, it is 35 dollars to change it. There are not many independent places anymore, but even before they would charge and and a leg.

@Desertdi. Shop around. At last visit a couple years ago our big, fancy local jeweler was charging $16. I went up the street to our small one-man operation and he charged $10. He does a better job with repairs too.

My "good" watch is water resistant down to 300 feet. A battery change costs about $100, and the repair shop has to keep it for 5 days to test the water tight mechanism. It's the only shop in the area that's authorized to work on that brand and I'm not willing to possibly void the warranty by going elsewhere, so that's what I pay. Fortunately, a battery usually lasts me about 3-4 years.

@TheWanderingOne Are you a professional diver? Would love to read about it. 300 feet seems like well beyond any recreational diving.

This past Spring I had five batteries replaced and it cost $60. I guess compared to some of the prices posted here that is not out of line. But, it is getting costly and some don't even last very long.

This topic reminded me to check my watch as I rarely wear it. Can't find it but I ran across 2 others that were dead. Rummaged around and found some old watch batteries and changed them. I get them on ebay for less than $1 each. Just ordered fresh ones.
What these places charge to change a battery is highway robbery. My Dad showed me how to change it many years ago.

I no longer buy watches that need batteries. I stick with Cirizen Eco Drive. But when I used to need watch batteries (and it's a long time ago), I went to my local battery store (the kind that sells car batteries and other larger batteries. They also sold watch batteries and they cost $3. No charge for interting it into the watch. I doubt that's an option these days.

Most of the time my DH can get the back of the watch off himself and I buy the batteries on Ebay for dirt cheap, just a couple of dollars, and he replaces it himself.

My battery in my key fob just needed to be changed. I watched online how to change it. Went to the drugstore and bought a pack of 4 batteries for $5. But then I couldn't get the key fob opened. I took it to the dealer asked them to open it, pulled out my batteries and changed it myself in the dealership.
We had this done recently at a Battery store, Batteries Plus, and it was $25 for the battery and for them to put it in, my DH was afraid to fool with it himself.

Haven't worn a watch in years. But this conversation of changing watch batteries has encourages me to change the solar batteries in my solar lights outside before winter. I'm off to Ace Hardware to buy a bunch of batteries. Thanks for a great idea, ladies!
