To each his/her own.....I like looking at others homes and their decor. It may not be exactly the style I would choose but no style or amount of it is correct. It's all personal style.

The world be be extremely boring if we all decorated and looked the same.

@DREAMON. Well said! I have been in homes where even though it isn't my style, it looks really nice. Just because it isn't your style doesn't mean you can't appreciate it.My sister in law loves a lot of decor, and that isn't my style but in her home it looks good, it looks like her....It is all personal style for sure!

I tend to agree with you, and I especially agree that family pictures don't belong all over the house. Probably because my mom put our confirmation pictures on the piano. Few people look good at that pre-teen age. Later, it was our graduation pictures which were only slightly better.

I think for most people who enjoy home decor, (and many don't, so what I have to say may not apply to them), life has stages and cycles in which 'too much', 'not enough' or 'just right' will be different because of different circumstances and times of life.

What was once not enough for me (due to being young, just starting out and having little), became just enough and now has evolved into too much.

Also, whether you are more minimalist or like lots of things, either end of the spectrum can be appreciated and have beauty if done correctly. Displaying a lot isn't always 'cluttered' and having very minimal isn't always cold and uninviting. There are those who can make either extreme quite lovely, warm and welcoming.

But for most of us, our idea of what is 'just right' evolves as our life progresses through various stages and needs.

I agree with you whole post and especially with the part I bolded and underlined.

100%!!!

EXACTLY.

Our lives and our needs and our tastes and our desires (and on and on) are not static.  And appreciation can be had for many things, not only those that are "our taste."

I have a friend who works long hours at her job and her DH is a stay at home husband. He does the cleaning and he won't allow her to put decor out because he doesn't want to deal with cleaning it. Every surface in their home is bare, except for necessary lamps. The people who live in that home are very nice, warm people, but that house is cold and sad looking to me.

Like many have said on this thread, there is a fine line between too much and not enough and it's up to each of us to decide that.  Looking at decorating books can give us great ideas though.  A friend of mine had a decorator come out and help her decorate her new house, boy the stuff she has to dust now. I counted 10 pieces of stuff on her foyer table alone!  Way too much!  The decorator was not only being paid for her time but for the items my friends decided to get.  It'll make me think twice before I call a decorator for help!  I'm not saying it's not good to use one, just remember that they make their money on how much you buy from them!

@Hayfield  Some decorators make their money this way but not all. I am a retired consulting interior designer and I charged a flat hourly fee. I made no money on what I sold.

So that is why your home is so beautiful.  You certainly do a great job!

@Regal Bee I bet you did a great job helping other people decorate their homes. No doubt there were people whose style did not match yours but you have a knack for making things work.
