I don't care for anything about the basement family room.  I also prefer some kind of hand rail/railing for stairs of any kind.

In my county, those steps would not be allowed due to building codes. Of course, if you made it a do it yourself job and had no permits.... but then if you tried to sell your house, it would be flagged/not pass inspection.

 

Same thing with open stairs now.
