I have a traditional coil bed, with a 3 inch memory foam topper and a Company Store down mattress pad.  My bed is not hot, but I do sink in, which I love.  Total comfort...

I agree about using a lambswool pad. That kind of pad maintains body temperature where it won't get hot even in the summer...it's self-regulating , breathable and that's what's so wonderful about lambswool.

It depends what the mattress pad is made from.  Memory foam can get hot.  I own a memory foam mattress but it is mixed with other materials and it is not hot.  Try to do some research online and read about different mattress pads.  Good luck.
