Re: how to like hardwood floors

I love wood floors but I would have to have infloor heating to go with them.

Maybe you need to check your air filters. I have hardwoods, and I don't feel a need to dust each day.

Moving to another place is a drastic step. Try putting down some area rugs so there isn't so much wood showing.

Re: how to like hardwood floors

I had to read the title twice because, to me, how can anyone NOT love hardwood floors? I absolutely hate carpet. My son has terrible allergies and asthma and we had to (slowly) get rid of all carpet when he was growing up. I vacuumed that carpet daily. You would not believe how nasty that carpet was when we pulled it up. We were floored! {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

When people mention how much dirt shows in hardwood, just think that the same dirt is there in carpet, you just can't see it as much.

We hope to sell our house and move soon. This house has mostly hardwoods, but some carpet. I will have no carpet in our new house!

Re: how to like hardwood floors

Hardwood is better for your health because carpeting holds dust mites and who-knows-what (especially in a rental).

So, buy some rugs. Go to IKEA and get big area rugs with a nice thick pad. You can cover an entire room with a large rug. Or go to a carpet store and get a "bound remnant." So you can get the look of plush, wall to wall for not much money. Measure it so you have just a couple of inches showing around the border of the room.

I also like these washable rugs from Solutions catalogue called Vista rugs. They have a non slip backing and can be thrown in the wash. I use these more for high traffic areas like in front of the kitchen sink, the laundry room, hallways.

Use a Bona mop system. You can get the basic broom - which is a little bigger than a Swiffer. And then just spray the cleaner. Or you can get the all-in-one model in which you press the trigger and it sprays the cleaner while you mop. With Bona you can dry dust mop with the fluffy white pad and then do a wet dust mop with the blue micro fiber pad.

Re: how to like hardwood floors

I honestly believe the deal here is that you either like them or you don't. I happen to like the look of them, but am too cold-blooded to be comfortable living with our current situation.

When we retired, we moved to a new state and rented a house, so we could get the feel for our new city, without making a purchase we might regret. This house has hardwood floor on slab and we have cold temps at night beginning in October through May and sometimes June, and have winter temps that can get into single digits. Our kitchen floor is slate. Burrr. Everything is cold, cold, cold - at least to me. DH doesn't give a darn. So, we laid down a Persian carpet from our huge house in another state in the living room; purchased an inexpensive contemporaty rug from Fred Meyer (which I love) for the diningroom and another for the Master Bedroom that lays at the foot of the bed. The second bedroom has no carpet, nor does the third. Because we day care our 17 month old granddaughter, I told my husband that we needed to purchase runners for the hall, so bugged him til he said yes. Geesh! What a big deal that turned into! I didn't want her running up and down the hall and falling down as she was crawling, learning how to walk, then running and also pushing toys, etc.

I sincerely hope you can find another place to live that is to your liking or perhaps find area rugs that are visually pleasing and match your furniture, walls and decor.

Good luck!

Re: how to like hardwood floors

I love hardwood floors in my home and have dark, distressed wood.

A friend of mine has cream colored light wood in her home and it's beautiful. The light color shows nothing as far as soil/dust.

She says it's the easiest floor ever to keep clean.

WE had carpet throughout our home which we built 15 yrs. ago...when we replaced the worn out carpeting in living area and master bedroom last fall, we chose luxury vinyl that is woodgrain..we love it!

Re: how to like hardwood floors

I agree HW are a LOT of up-keep. The o'Cedar Dual Action Flip Mop (can be found at Target or Home Depot) has been my best friend along with my Haan steamer.

I have SEVERAL mop heads ready to go, as I dust mop DAILY. I use one side dry and the other side barely damp with vinegar water.

I use one a day and wash them all once a week. I use my Haan steamer once a week.

I have mats outside of all doors and in each entrance way to help 'trap' dirt and dust.

We do not have kids and our dogs are no shed. Just as a point of reference.

Re: how to like hardwood floors

I think hardwood flooring is the most beautiful. Can't imagine ever going back to carpet. We put marble inlaid into hardwood in the foyer and that is a bit of a pain to keep up but I love looking at it.
