I think when you use to much color in things that are not accessories a house starts to look dated. Sure paint can be changed but it would be a pain to do all the time. I much prefer adding color with your accessories. Much easier and cheaper to change. Our builder had a house posted where the color pallet was gray. Then they had teal accessories throughout the house. It was so beautiful.

That sounds a lot like our home. I chose a deep red as my accent color in the livingroom, dining area and kitchen. I recently added an occasional chair that is upholstered in a red/tan plaid with a gold metallic thread to the living room because I felt I needed a shot of color. My couch and loveseat are tan. My diningroom set is modern with deep red leather chairs, dark wood and a glass top table. The sideboard came from our originial dining room set, it's dark wood. I have red and white appliances in the kitchen and red&white towels etc. I have red lanterns on each end of the sideboard. The red happened by accident when I fell in love with and bought our diningroom set. It was not the original plan but I'm happy with the way it all came together. The walls/doors/woodwork throught the house are ivory and the carpet is all tan. Our family room furniture has rust faux suede slipcovers and the color story is ivory/tan/rust with glass tables. I haven't actually done much with the bedroom yet. It looks nice but I haven't really decorated yet. Our bedroom furniture is black lacquer and modern. I have a pale blue and silver comforter with throw pillows. When I recover from my recent knee replacement surgery, decorating our bedroom will be my next project. I think a black&white theme with splashes of red but that's just a thought.

For me the color gray is depressing. I can only have it my house in very small things. Gray walls would send me to the psych ward. Even with the few gray things I have in my house, I still have to counteract it with strong pops of color and lots of it. My entire house has white paint on all the walls and ceilings. ![]()

It is highly suggested that adjacent rooms flow into one another. You can carry the colors from one room to another by the use of accesories so every room doesn't look alike. On the color wheel, colors that touch each other are a match. When looking at a color wheel, think of all of the brights and darks like a paint chip. You can use all of those.
Yellow-green to yellow.
One of the more inviting and welcoming homes I've ever been in was a Craftsman style, with colors much as you've shown here, but deeper tones of the same. The owner used autumnal tones of sagey green, warm yellow, and persimmon. Your eye did not focus on the colors, per se, but flowed naturally and very, very easily from one room to the next.
I'd like to see more of that occasionally on home shows on tv instead of only neutrals. Neutrals are great, and could be argued to be best in the majority of situations, but there are other options and possibilities.

@SilleeMee I agree that grey walls are too institutional.

I'm not a big fan of all neutral decor and have grown sort of weary of the steady diet of creams and greys that most decorators have been touting for, to my mind, a little too long. Still, if your larger 'investment' pieces are mostly neutral, you can introduce color with less substantial accent pieces, as well as with accessories, throw pillows, curtains, cushions, art, pottery and so on, which are less costly to replace or change out seasonally, if you wish.

Viibrant colors - large and/or small accents including linens. Pops of color will contrast nicely with all the neutral earthiness. I've done it in my apartment and really enjjoy those accents.

@151949Could the leather furniture be placed in your husband's den or a family room (perhaps in a lower level)? You've mentioned owning that furniture for a long time. Do you want it in the living room? If so, why are you letting the builders' decorators decide upon the paint colors? I'm confused. You are building this house! Why aren't you selecting your paints and everything else?

We are buying a "spec house" which means the builder is building it to sell finished. The choices wrere all already made by the builder's designers. By the time we found this house it was almost finished. They were painting the primer on the inside the first time we ever toured the house. We were told from the beginning that no changes could be made because everything to complete this home has already been purchased. We were agreeable to that as it means the house will be ready to move into quickly.
