Re: cornstalks in outside fall decor

Be careful with cornstalks. Some have brought in creatures into their yard and never bring them into your home or office. Last year, someone used cornstalks as an indoor decoration for a halloween party and they brought in roaches which were hidden in the intact corn cobs still attached! I heard someone brought mice into their homes/parties as well. I was at that party and there were tiny bugs crawling among the "cupcake" table. In the center was a cornstalk with a scarecrow. We all looked closely at the "bugs" and found out they were tiny roaches and upon closer inspection by someone brave enough to figure it out (not me), they found the bugs were coming down from the cornstalk!

Might be nice outside (mailbox, etc), but be careful inside. Thought I'd share this so you won't have a problem into Thanksgiving if they nest somewhere else after leaving their cornstalk-home.

I agree. One year we put them around the posts on our patio. The stalks still had some corn cobs on them and this attracted all kinds of critters, especially squirrels. They would sit there eating the corn and would drop some kernels in the garden. The following year we had something growing in the garden and didn't know what it was. It turned out to be corn. It was funny, but we don't put corn close to the patio anymore.

I love the looks of them for outside décor but I don't have anywhere to tie them except on my back deck posts and I can't really see a need to decorate out back like that.

I enjoy seeing them in other people's yards, but I've done them before and don't care for the clean up when the weather turns. I'm sticking to pumpkins and chrysanthemums. The corn stalks do make a very pretty presentation though.

I've never used them, but agree the cleanup has held me back.

Re: cornstalks in outside fall decor

I used to do four groupings of corn stalks, one in between each of the 2 sets of porch columns, one in between the two car garage and one tied down by the mailbox. At $4.99 each that's do-able but last year they were $9.99 each or 3 for $25 but then I had to pay another $9.99 for the 4th one which was a total of $35...a lot for something that otherwise would have just gotten plowed under at the end of the season. Add that to the cost of 2 bales of hay (I forgot exactly how much) but I was up around $50 before I spent a dime on the pumpkins and the mums.

I won't fall victim to doing that again...not that year, not ever. Ridiculous.

i don't blame you!! that is way too much money! i had set my price in my head - i was not going to pay over $5 for dead dry cornstalks! and i was shocked to find them for $4.99. if not i would have come up with something else.

as for the hay - i don't buy it but there was a man on our town's face book page selling his for $5 each and the people were buying several at a time! i don't know what the price usually is but they were obviously happy with it.

I've done this before and I think it's so cute! I will also put out a bale of straw, scarecrows, pumpkins, mums, colorful corn, etc -- whatever I can find that year! Have fun!

There's not much decorating in our subdivision anymore as the demographics have changed.

There were a lot of kids in our subdivision, but they've all grown up and the kids/parents aren't into it as much anymore. I feel the same way. It's not the same when your kids aren't little anymore.

A lot of kids don't take the time to stop at look at all the decorations. They run up to the house, get the candy and run to the next house. They're unaware of the Halloween atmosphere. When I was a kid, I loved taking the time to stop at look at each decoration. That was part of the fun of going trick or treating.

lol - our house has so many decorations outside that we have become a designated photo stop for families. parents love to stop and pose their kids in front of some of the best decorations. Obviously, some are still taking time to enjoy the decorations.

i have heard a few people to say this and i always think it is so sad! why stop enjoying the fun of decorating just because the kids are grown?? for those that really like it i mean! i know some people say "i did it for the kids and i am glad i don't have to now!" but if you enjoy it then do it for you. my MIL and FIL used to still decorate for the holiday's and my DH and his brothers had not lived at home for many years! they still liked to do it. but you don't have to go all out like when the kids where young and at home.

and as i have said before - i am the only girl in my house. my guys don't care about all the decorations but they know i do. so they always look foward to seeing what i am planning and if it is not done when they think it should be they are asking me "what's wrong? are you sick! do you need our help?" {#emotions_dlg.laugh} but if they didn't i would not care!{#emotions_dlg.lol} i would still do it because i like it!
