I won't wash clothes without them. If the color is real dark, or I feel the shirt is cheap I'll even put 3 in. They really do pick up the extra color. I've  used these for years.

@riley1, I don't prewash my fabrics beforehand either. 

 

I did it once because that was "the rule" and ended up with a tangled and twisted frayed mess that got thrown away.

 

Prewashing also changes the feel of the fabric while you are working with it.

I separate my laundry ... only whites / light colors  / dark colors.  

 

If I buy something that I think may "bleed dye" ... I'll soak in the sink first before I put it in the machine.
