Oh boy!!
DD and I are planning to move in January when our lease is up---makes my whole body just ache, thinking about it---BUT---we need to be closer to DDs work. she spends about 2-3 hours a day on the bus to and from---we went yesterday (11/8) to tour a place. Wow--had to do quite the navigating just to find the right elevators to see the place--how in the world would the move go?? Anyway--it was pretty nice --new and modern and light and bright---but bedrooms and living area was sooo small. Bathrooms were amazing and kitchen good too. And best of all--was literally about --maybe--- 10 minutes to walk to her job. And was on the 5th floor--OMG--went out on the narrow balcony and it was way too high up for me. So the search continues----was a really lovely mild sunny fall day--we walked to the H-mart asian grocery to do some shopping, back to TJs for more shopping and lunch, then home---

Was there an interesting view? There is surely a freight elevator.
One more question as an ex Eastside resident 🤓 Is it south of your present area?

Good luck in your search! It's been decades since I had an apartment.
Do you have a Realtor helping you? I would let them know what you liked about the apartment that you saw and what you didn't like. Hopefully you can find something that meets most of your criteria within your budget!

@wagirl Keep an open mind & don't be quick to rule one out. You will have to compromise no matter where you go. A 10 minute walk to work is a huge plus. Fifth floor is not high. Still walkable if power is out. Good luck on your apt. search.

@wagirl Best of luck in your search! A lot of work to move but once you find a suitable place and get over the hump, it will be great. Yes, you'll have to compromise but as long as you find a place that has the most important things on your wish list, you will adjust. And your DD will have a much better quality of life if she's close to work - I certainly remember that from my commuting days!

A short walk to work is dream to have. Maybe restrict the search to a small circle area of choices? It is out there for you both đź©·

Five floors isn't that high, with a balcony even small you can put potted plants to somewhat hide the the height. Most apartments with balconies are a luxury.
Beautiful and functioning bathrooms and kitchens are a plus and can make up for small bedrooms (perfect time to purge).
A major plus is your daughter's walking distance to work! It changes and makes life less stressful and I imagine for you too.
Like another poster mentioned, there will be freight elevators to bring your furniture up.
You mentioned walking to Trader Joe's, shopping and having lunch out, was it from said apartment? Another plus if so.
I've lived in small apartments and houses and love them.
Another plus, it cost less to heat and cool.
Have you looked in the same complex for another a bit larger?
Happy hunting !

@wagirl Stick to your guns until you find something in which you'll feel comfortable and at home. It's fine for others to suggest a 5th floor 'isn't that high', but I completely understand that is an individual choice Some people don't like heights just as some people aren't comfortable with lots of things and cannot be made comfortable with them. Of course there will be compromise, but it's up to you as to what things you'll be able to accept and to designate those things upon which you feel unable to compromise. I also agree that for two people, small bedrooms and living areas are a non-starter.

@wagirl Sounds great to me! I would love nice living areas and small bedrooms because you don't move much there.
I lived on the sixth floor in my dorm and loved it! It was scary at first because I'd never lived over ground floor and seldom been higher than 2 stories in my life.
It didn't seem really high (I am afraid of heights) and when we had to evacuate because of a fire it wasn't too far to run down the stairs. And I did adore having the view!
Just a few thoughts! Looking for a home that suits you is fun and trying at the same time! Hope you find your spot!

@tansy --hi!--the view was overlooking a communal courtyard away from the traffic--was an ok view---we are looking in downtown Redmond. Oh geez, there were many elevators, both frieght and reg ones--- think at least 3 per floor. DD works close to the Redmond library.
