a question regarding dog toenails on flooring.

If you have that LVP flooring and you have dogs, big dogs in particular, do their toenails scratch up that type of floor? I have two german sheperds and really ugly ceramic tile with even uglier grout. The grout is missing in chunks, at first we thought it might be the vacuum cleaner ruining it but now we're thinking it from the dogs feet. What do you think, I feel like having the tile taken out and replaced with the LVP flooring but if the dogs would cause scratches when they"re rough-housing and being dogs I'd rather not pay for new floors that will get ruined.

We have luxury vinyl plank and 4 dogs, 3 cats.  No issues with claw marks at all.

Re: a question regarding dog toenails on flooring.

I have LVP flooring in two rooms.  My dog's nails do not cause any damage to my floor HOWEVER I have a collie, not a german shepherd.  While my dog is large, he is gentle and a soft walker (if you know what I mean).  I feel like german shepherds have a heavier walk to them - they have larger paws and the nails are bigger.

I still think you'd probably be ok with this type of floor, but I'd talk to a floor expert first if I were you.

Re: a question regarding dog toenails on flooring.

I had LVP in a former home with a great pyrenese mix dog.  No issues with her claws.  But I will say it will scratch if you move larger furniture pieces.

When we moved we installed engineered wood floors.  Nothing scratches these floors!  Even moving furniture around.  My contractor took his keys to a piece before we had decided to install and scratched back and forth with force with no scratching.  That sold me.

And just so you know, both homes had tile floors throughout and they did not have to remove the tile.  They put a layer of plastic material under the flooring,  We never had a problem.  If they don't have to remove the tile it will save you time and a huge mess.

Best of luck on your new floors!

Re: a question regarding dog toenails on flooring.

I have two active dogs and LVP flooring.  No problem at all.

My vet's office installed LVP flooring several years ago and it still looks brand new.  Seeing how it held up with all the traffic, animals, accidents, etc. helped with my decision about going with LVP.

What is good for the goose today will also be good for the gander tomorrow.

Re: a question regarding dog toenails on flooring.

I have 2 large German Shepherd dogs and a variety of flooring. Their nails don't seem to scratch or bother any of the tile, LVP. My only thought on the tile grout is 1) how old is it and 2) what type of machine/cleaner are you using. Sme of the cleaner heads on some of these cleaning machines are tough on flooring seams and grout. I'm thinking that the dogs toenails are probably too thick to pick at the grout unless it's wider than a standard tile. If you replace the flloors then I would suggest you choose from the top two levels of choice. I've had 5 GSD's over the years and a variety of floor surfaces. This is what I found to work for us. Good luck.

I have porcelain tile, LVP flooring, hardwood floors, a linoleum floor and carpeting in my house and a very active 110# German Shepherd - no scratches or any damage whatsoever.

I'd blame an installation problem - some kind of defect -to you tile problem, certainly not you German Shepherds.

Oh thank you all so much, this is great news. Then maybe I'll go and look at new flooring. We just moved into this house 2 years ago, I don't know how old the tile and grout are but it's most ugly.

My brother has LVP flooring, 2 large dogs and 2 cats. I've never seen any damage from animals.
