I've never tried them, but would guess when cotton prices spiked a few years ago, they were a cheaper alternative.
I wonder how they will stand the test of time.

Are they really that popular or are the vendors selling them because they are cheaper and just hope they will become popular? Seems they are on sale everywhere.

Just for the heck of it I went to the web sites of some of the higher end stores such as Nordstroms, Macy's and Bloomingdales and not one of them had any microfiber sheet sets.
To me that is telling. I just have a feeling that they would not wear very well.
I'll stick to my Egyptian cotton sheets. No matter how many times they are laundered they still feel wonderful and they last so long. You usually get tired of them before they wear out.

I have several sets of microfiber sheets and just donated the last few sets of cotton sheets that I had.
They wash beautifully and look nice on the bed...no wrinkles. They are comfortable. I still get hot flashes, and don't find the sheets to be a problem. Even my husband likes them.

Only 100% cotton for me. Good percale if I can find it. I want my sheets to breath. LM

Same here. I generate quite a lot of heat and nothing but 100% cotton is my choice. I usually like a heavier, like around 800tc, Egyptian Cotton.
But, I have also always wondered why microfiber seems to be so popular. I just figured that it was that most people just don't generate anywhere near as much heat as I. I also see a lot of cotton/poly blend sheets - no thanks to that one either!
I also prefer the 800ct Egyptian cotton. Helped me get through my Menopausal night sweats....

I have a few sets of microfiber sheets and use them mostly in the summer months. To me they are cool, not hot, and provide just a nice amount of coverage on a summer night if it gets cooler through the night. I also love percale cotton sheets and use them intermittently with microfiber ones.

I found the fabric to be light but it had a clammy feeling to it and didn't seem to breathe. I like some microfiber products but sheets aren't one of them.
Why are they so popular? They're cheap.
I also had a couple of sets and having my own personal summers, I felt like I was sleeping in a Baggie. Hot, sticky, clammy. Just down right icky.

Sorry for the dumb question, but is microfiber the same as the microfleece malden mills type sheets?

Yes. They are both made from polyester.
