Re: Why Does Everyone Love Tile?

I hate tile. It's great when it's new. But cleaning the grout is a pain.

Re: Why Does Everyone Love Tile?

Wanted to replace vinyl flooring in kitchen (dog knocked over can of shiny black paint and it stained it) with 1) first choice, hardwood flooring - but too expensive; or 2) second choice, vinyl flooring - but quotes came in higher than tile; so, put in indoor/outdoor tile flooring. Laminate would have been the cheapest to install, but would not match with hardwood throughout the house and, cannot refinish and would have gotten scratched with dog running in and out and anyone with pointy heels. Anything breaks if dropped on floor - even L&L. Got a tinted grout, but, was told by a professional, doesn't really help. Also had to replace the countertop and got silistone - granite needs to be specially maintained annually - too much grief. Like the silistone, but put potholders down - not for protection - but for the noise - ceramic plates on the stone bothers me - keep thinking it's gonna break! Definitely would go with vinyl flooring though if I were you.

We love love love our tile! It completely updated our kitchen and bathrooms. Had vinyl for years and hated it. Neither of us like wood flooring. If it were up to me I'd have our entire house tiled!

Re: Why Does Everyone Love Tile?

i am a tile and hardwood floor lover......almost every room in our home is either done in tiles or hardwood floors. i find them easy to care for, the dirt does not show as easily as on carpets, and they showcase beautiful rugs and persian carpets well. i just think the overall look and wearability is nicer than vinyl/parquet/linoleum. good quality flooring can last for years. some of the hardwood floors in our home have been here for 50+ years and have required minimal care. anytime we have moved the floors were one of the first things to get taken care of.

Re: Why Does Everyone Love Tile?

I think tile is beautiful, and it seems to be what everyone has wanted for the last decade plus. But we have had it in the kitchen and laundry room area in our home for the last 20 years and it looks pretty well worn at this point. It has been dinged by things falling on it and it is going to be a horrendous job to replace it. I am horrified every time I wash it and see more damage. I am suspecting that as it ages, it is more easily damaged.

My dilemma is what I should replace it with. All the homes in my neighborhood and surrounding areas have tile or tile type materials on the floors along with hardwood, which we have in the formal areas. But since I don't want tile, so will be exploring other options in the next year or so.

Love the look of tile, just not the durability of it.

Re: Why Does Everyone Love Tile?

I always wanted tile and my current house has lots of it. My only complaint is I have cracking grout. I think they spread it when it was too dry. I don't find it cold or too hard. If I were to do it again, I think I would stick with tile.

Re: Why Does Everyone Love Tile?

When we redone our kitchen, we were going with tile, but ended up with a vinyl flooring that actually looks like tile. It has indented grout lines and is not that shiny-vinyl smooth finish. In fact, when they came to measure for our counter tops, the guy actually bent over and touched my floor. He couldn't believe it was not tile! They have really improved vinyl flooring. Happy I did not get "real tile". Easy to keep clean, too.Smile I think it was a little higher priced than most, but definitely worth it.

I don't like tile at all. It's too hard, and I hate the grout. I prefer hardwood floors.

Re: Why Does Everyone Love Tile?

I'd not want tile floors either... It's fine as a back splash, but if you don't want tile floors don't feel compelled to follow the trend, assuming it even is one... Should I ever redo my kitchen, I do NOT want tile floors, dark granite counter tops OR stainless steel appliances... And should I ever move, I wouldn't mind having a kitchen/great room, but otherwise have NO desire for 'open concept' living either...

Re: Why Does Everyone Love Tile?

There are some very nice looking laminates and vinyls these days; if that's what you prefer, go for it.
