I love cloth tablecloths and always use them on my dining room table.  I have seasonal tablecloths which I change accordingly.  I do use a vinyl cloth on my kitchen table because it is more practical and there are very pretty vinyl cloths to choose from.

I have pretty cloth placemats on my dining room table.  It's huge, therefore a tablecloth is a bit much.  They can be washed on gentle and air dryed.  It looks nice and I always have a centerpiece which gets changed seasonally as do the placemats.

Kitchen table usually chilwich place mats, sometimes a cloth.  Sometimes rattan place mats. 

Dining room, nothing.  Maybe a tureen on the middle, occasionally a runner.  For company placemats because it is a long table.

Dining room - a solid tablecloth with a lace tablecloth over it.  Cloth napkins when we have a family meal in there. 

Kitchen - cloth tablecloth, cloth runner, cloth placemats.  White or seasonal print paper napkins for everyday, cloth when we have company, but it's a casual meal.

Only eat in the dining room and always on a cloth with cloth napkins.  Remove it each time.  A habit.

We eat on a very old enamel top table for all everyday dining with cloth placemats and paper napkins.  Easy to wash placemats and wipe table.  Big wood dining table will have a table cloth and/or cloth placemats for more formal meals.

It's mostly just the two of us.

Kitchen table - runner is always on the glass top table w/ herbs as center pc. For meals add a placemat. This is where we eat most of the time. When the boys were home they liked eating at the island and I used random placemats for them vs the nicer ones we use now.

Dinning room table- runner w/ green plant as center pc. It's an antique table and when we eat formally I use table cloth and several runners and chargers. I wish one of my sons would take this table as I am not a fan. But no one wants it...except my spouse.

Our dining room table is very rarely used for meals, but is ALWAYS loaded done with everyone's stuff.   Right now, trucker daughter's wallet, keys, mini blender, coffee mug, and 2 bags of food she'll take with her on the road are on the table.   Teacher daughters packages and mail from today, as well as medication for the guinea pig are in her place at the table.  My keys are on the table.  2 dining room chairs are covered by coats.   

Therefore, I use a brightly colored tablecloth and a plastic cover to protect my wood table.

None of the above for either my kitchen or dining table. Both tables are rustic and look better without.
