Re: When you put things in the freezer ....

@Sooner

I used to go food shopping and buy things because they were BOGO or on "sale" only to realize we never ate 1/2 of it (and pantry items were donated to food bank - which is fine)

As far as cooking -- our tastes have changed heavy meals aren't what we like anymore.  We have been eating alot of fish, salads and as much as we love pasta I don't think we've had this in 7 months!

We are doing the same  -- my food bill has been great these past few months.  Although of course fresh vegs are still high and on our list.

You guys have got great organization!

We very rarely cook at home.

In our freezer right right now are two loaves of bread that my husband eats, one package of mini bagels, one package of English muffins, two bags of Birds Eye Steam Fresh Broccoli florets, six corn tortillas, three boxes of Larry’s mashed potatoes, two individual frozen pizzas, two ziploc bags of two cookies each for my husband and five frozen Stouffer dinners for my husband.  And two ziploc bags of green peppers, chopped, that we grew last year.  That’s all that’s in there.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: When you put things in the freezer ....

I use a vacuum sealer for all meats and other similar things. I write the type of meat/food, and the date sealed. I freeze corn instead of canning it, and I seal it as well.

Commercially purchased food, like frozen vegetables, frozen juice etc. already comes with an expiration date, so I don't bother to duplicate that.

Baked goods are wrapped in plastic wrap, then into metal cookie tins and it is unbelievable how good those things keep, even better than in lock and lock.

@Carmie

gee that pic looks like my freezer when I was raising my family -- everything was organized and marked.  Both kids were extremely active in sports, etc. so i cooked on my days off for the week (in bulk) and freezed lots of things.

Now that its just the 2 of us -- no big freezer and I've even given up baking & freezing items.  Now I go to a great italian bakery (a bit of a drive but worth it) when we feel like a treat!

Re: When you put things in the freezer ....

@homedecor1  In our home there are only the two of us.  I have an upright freezer and two refrigerators..one is a French door model and the other one is a freezer on the top refrigerator.

All freezers and refrigerators are full and usually are.

We have an RV on a permanent site by a Lake that we use in the warmer months. We have a small RV fridge/freezer and, in a large garden shed, we have a deep chest freezer and a full size refrigerator.

Probably by the first week on June, the fridges and freezers there will be full too.

We always have food in our home.  We hardly ever go out to eat, so we go through food, especially veggies.  I freeze them when I get them in abundance during the summer months. I also buy whole strip steaks, spare ribs on sale and lots of seafood.

My oldest granddaughter said if we ever have a zombie apocalypse or an emergency, she is coming here cause there's food for months.

Often, my kids will "shop"in my freezer when they want or need something.  I also donate food to my sister and another relative...both need help when they run out of money and food.  I keep it in my freezer until they need it and have room for it.

I have a small freezer; mostly I know what I have in there and nothing sits too long.  I don't mark anything - don't need too, though I do repackage fresh meats.

Re: When you put things in the freezer ....

In a few weeks we will be in hurricane & tropical storm season here. The chance of losing electricity for several days is very prominent. Since I only live a mile from Publix we ate our way thru the freezer and now it is about 3/4 empty. Our plan is not to keep very much in the fridge and instead to shop every few days.

@Carmie

for sure if I wasn't 1500 miles from my family I'd be doing the same!!! I love to read about families who are close enough to "raid the fridge, pantry & more!". I miss that....
