I agree that there is often an interplay between the two, often subconscious. Here's an example-- my personal coloring is sort of pale taupe (hair) hazy blue-gray (eyes) cream with a faint tinge of blush (complexion) I gradually became aware that my clothes and defintiely my room colors often replicate that, roughly.

My living room is a soft, low contrast combo of a hard-to-pin-down, grayed, robins' egg blue, cream and taupe, with a few touches of blush. Sometimes the colors we look good in become our best living environment....

By this token, I should be working on an orange, green and peachy room for my husband, and a deep chocolate, medium brown and pale olive one for my son!
