What's a coverlet?

I'm looking for a replacement for my king size light weight comforter. I would prefer something that I could put in my normal size washing machine without having to schlepp to a laudromat. Is a coverlet less bulky and easier to wash at home than a comforter?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
