What makes a great painter?

I'm a great artist but when it comes to wall paint, I'm terrible.

I have all the tools from brushes to rollers but I get more on me and my hands/arms than what's on the wall!

I bought 1-1/2" masking tape to mask off areas too but I'm still wiping off the molding with a towel.

Any tips? I watch HGTV and one, two, three, everything is painted.
