I like painted and stained trims and have both, but the stained and sealed is so much easier to maintain.

O/T and FWIW, I will never use another trim paint unless it contains enamel and is specifically made to withstand high traffic trim areas like door jambs near light switches.

My current bedroom and half bath trim are done in either Sherwin-Williams Duration or SuperPaint, in a discontinued off white.  Trim has become tacky over a few years and the tacky does not clean off.

To save myself the hassle of scraping off the tacky areas and repainting everything, I just washed down the affected boards from top to bottom with TSP, and coated them with water-based polyurethane with a paintbrush.  In just an hour or two of drytime, they felt slick and better than new to the touch.

I wanted to share because I've been dealing with this annoying issue.

I hope it helps someone.

Thanks for the information @SHOPR...

@stevieb,  A professional would hopefully know these things, but since I'm not, I learn as I go.  If it helps anyone make a wiser paint decision than I did in these two rooms, then that's great.  :-)

FYI, oil or alkyd based paint is pretty much no longer sold except in limited products and limited colors, but, it is/was a great durable, cleanable trim paint in my kitchen and main bathroom.  Only the rooms where I used the latex trim have had the tacky issue develop.  Hoping this urethane fix I did holds up.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Paint Color for Trim?

I'm on bathroom remodel #3, each bathroom has it's own bedroom.  I just painted all of the beautiful crown molding Pure White from Sherwin Williams...in bedrooms and bathrooms. Oh, used it in the basement too!
