My mind is cluttered...so is my house. I have 2 of everything...in case I can't FIND the "first one"

I grew up with several master's styles of furniture which I thought ugly, but at 14 I went to spend the night with a friend. I walked into that house and couldn't believe her mother's primitive furniture!
The unusual pieces, the pull back curtains that were pulled back at night with their ties! OH my! Her accessories were wonderful too! So pretty!

I would never let someone else make decisions about my home without my input. I would never hire someone to do that anyway.
I prefer functional spaces with personal touches and color. When I'm looking for something for my home, I have listened to opinions from salespeople and in store designers about various choices in furnishings, flooring, appliances, accessories, colors, etc, but I never let them talk me into something I don't like or want.
Just a couple years ago, a showroom salesperson tried to talk me out of what I wanted by telling me that "nobody does that anymore". I told him that was an exaggeration, and then proceeded to tell him why I wanted what I did. He finally relented, and I got what I wanted.

When you walk through a room in your home and feel happy and contented. That is successful decor.

Decor is so personal to me.
I like happy. Happy colors. I want my house to look sunny on a dark stormy day. I want to be proud of what people see as soon as they walk in my front door. Shallow, maybe, but my choice. (Same for the back door.)
I buy almost all my furniture from one company (Bramble Furniture Co.) through home boutique dealers. It's not for everyone, but it serves a purpose for our lifestyle among other reasons.
I include almost all decorating category choices from rustic, modern, French country, Asian anitques, handmade and/or handpainted to quirky.
I like artwork and decor that, if not one of a kind, is numbered or uniquely different from like pieces. And again, quirky. lol (I have Samantha the Seeweed fish hanging in the men's bathroom.)
My house is casual and comfy, but bright and colorful. And quirky.![]()

My condo building is comprised of many different floor plans. I live in one of the smallest units in the building while several of my friends live in the largest units. But I don't necessarily feel that means my home doesn't "measure up" to theirs. Finishes matter and I am fortunate that the previous owners did not spare costs when picking finishes. I am flattered when receiving compliments on my home.
I think my decorating leans more masculine than feminine. My furniture leans to modern/traditional in neutral colors (upholstery) while the wood is dark. No ruffles or frills or pastels. I display few meaningful pieces of decor and modern artwork. I am a minimalist at heart and cannot do clutter.
The 11 foot ceilings call to mind an older construction, while it is not. Basically I tell people my place is like an old man living in New York (ok, a tidy old man) Haha!

@wilma good for you. The salesperson was really wrong on this one. They should respect your decisions and listen to you first and foremost. I get wary of these types of "pushy" sales people too. It's a turn off.

All of you are right in regards to the posts.
I believe most people don't have the money to even hire a designer (I never would because I don't have it or would not either in the first place because it's my space. And I like to keep control of my taste and my home too).
All in all, I know many who do not have taste in clothing or know what to wear clothing wise. They cannot put an outfit together. We see it here all the time on the fashion forum. They ask for suggestions and rightfully so. If you do not have the talent. Same would go for home renovation yes?
Some do not even know what type they are either. Am I cluttered or a minimalist, hoarder? - LOL.
Back to the designers. I have known a few who would like suggestions from a "designer" and they are paid by the hour.
They could offer you some suggestions let's say if your bathrooms are small and how to maximize the space. Listen and run. That's what suggestions are for and it's space.
They might charge $200.00 for the hours.Write down your ideas and present. Then they are gone and you go shopping on your own. They are done with you and expect it.
It's silly to think everyone has a designer for their homes. Most don't even need or want them or cannot afford which I agree.
Then you put back your stuff, bring it back and as usual style it to your liking.
The designer is there mostly to offer suggestions on space again
if you would like to reconfigure certain areas. Mostly kitchens and bath
