I just read an article about the things that are not good to donate and why--was very eye opening to me. I donated almost half of the stuff I collected/used, from living  in my house for 35  years and moved to my apartment. That was in 2021. I think I did ok as far as donating usable items. Don't recall where I read this article. I also gave away alot thru my local open door and sold some too.

@wagirl I try try to keep up with those lists.  Thanks for reminding me.  I don't donate stained or really worn clothing, or things I think people wouldn't want or use.

We donated a set of very high-dollar knives and wrapped them, double boxed them, taped and taped up, and marked all over them SHARP KNIVES.  I hated to see them tossed and was scared they might escape and injure garbage folks. Alerted the Salvation Army people when we dropped them off.

I'm sure someone was thrilled to get them!  I hope so!

@Sooner ---thats what I did too--at the donation place in my town, they also take clothing that are more or less rags , but I washed everything. Knives are a worry for me too and I usualy wrap  the blade in cardboard and tape---but the broken stuff got tossed and the usable things were donated.

Re: We have donated much stuff that. . .

Its sad to think sometimes what happens with a lot of this stuff. I have been for about the last year or two been very selective about what I buy.

When we moved about 4 years ago, we gave away and also threw away things that were still nice but wasn't being used for whatever reason.

Once we moved we said thats it-no more crazy buying! Plus hubby retired last April, and I want to retire the end of this year, so there is no reason to buy, buy, buy! Especially with clothing, where the heck are you going to wear all of those clothes anyway??

Well, @Sooner, the vets driver now calls me by name.  I get weekly emails when is my next pickup needed.  😉. I've been donating 6-8 times a year.  I've been in the process of combining three households into one.

When I was dropping at Goodwill before finding this pick up service, I was always surprised how much junk was in the bins.  Please trash the bad stuff.  Throw it in your trash if it's junk.  I always try to make sure my donations are in good enough shape to donate.

I got what I though was an off-putting comment when I donated some Christmas items to a Goodwill near me in early January. The attendant said, "Why are you donating these now? A little late."

I didn't think it required a response. Obviously I used them over the season, but was tired of looking at them and donated rather than stored. Certainly I can't be the only one who does that.

Needless to say, I no longer donate at that Goodwill and prefer driving farther to another or to St. Vincent De Paul.

The Goodwill man was rude @Etoile308 .  He has no clue that Christmas items are purchased throughout the year.
