We Picked Out the Flooring for our Addition

Again, thank you for your input about the different types of flooring for our adition which will be our new family room.

After considerable study and research of your suggestions and a visit to several warehouse dealers that our contractor deals with, we decided to go with tile. We love the travertine, but did not transition well with the rest of our 100+ year old farmhouse. We love the look of travertine and if we ever build a new home, I will choose travertine for some of the flooring. Vinyl sheeting was not an option, as the furniture would be too heavy and we were afraid it would "tear" when my husband does his frequent furniture re-arranging. The Cerama-tile was a candidate, but we decided on tile.

We chose a tile that is narrow but long and looks like real wood. The coloring is a light oak/maple kind of cross. It is not totally smooth, but has a finish that is not slippery. In addition, the grout between tiles will be about the width of the thickeness of a dime. It will be an effort to seal the grout and keep it sealed, but it also will not show the dirt like it would in wider grout. The grout will be sealed with a narrow artist paint brush. My husband's favorite hobby is drawing and painting compositions, so he is very comfortable with doing this.

We are going to put in radiant heating, with a stand-alone air conditioning unit that will be an auxiliary to our main furance. We are very excited and look forward to the completion. And, again, thank you for all your suggestions.
