Re: Water Heater vs. Tankless

I am a BIG fan of the tankless water heater.

Our company had tankless water heaters in every bathroom, the kitchen and 2 full bathrooms. There were on average of 50 employees in the company. So the tankless water heaters got quite a work out. And I worked in that building for 12+ years before I retired.

The only trouble we would encounter was when some guy thought that we didn't need the water as hot as it was. He would turn the thermostat down so far both hot and cold were the same temperature.

And I know that there was rarely any maintenance done on the tankless water heaters. I did Accounts Payable, so I saw every plumbing or maintenance bill. And I do not remember ever seeing a bill for work on the tankless water heaters.

Two negatives from me.  Neighbor said it takes forever to get hot water to the sinks.  Another friend's son is a plumber and he said never get one, they just aren't worth the money.

@kaydee50  I know there are water heater leak detection sensors with auto shut off, but I don't know anything about them.

WOW! I really do appreciate all the feedback. Just figured it would make sense to go with the tankless, but now I am rethinking that.

You all are awesome with your comments, both pro/con. I have a lot more thinking to do on this!

Re: Water Heater vs. Tankless

If you have water heaters in the attic, having maybe 80 gallons of water up there is something to consider as well.

Re: Water Heater vs. Tankless

After replacing a few leaky and one burst hot water heater over 25 years, we got a Rheem Marathon a few months ago. We're hoping it's the last water heater we ever have to buy as long as we're in this house.

Our house is all electric, so tankless was not for us. Also more cons than pros.

Thanks for the topic.

Most of us out here have whole house generators, and are always looking for ways to stretch out the propane.

Need to go out and hug my big tank 😂

@kaydee50 :  I live in a resort community where there are many second(third, forth) homes, maybe 50%.  Many of these people winterize their homes if they aren't going to visit for several months and some hire a service to keep an eye on them or clean them when they aren't there.
