In the past, I would take my large comforters to the laundromat - saves the home washer!

I have a bulky king comforter and here's my findings.
I was taking it to the dry cleaners for washing and they were charging me approx $23 to clean/fold/bag. They did a nice job and comforter looked really nice.
I got cheap one day, said to myself, you can do this yourself and put it in my washer and dryer. The biggest mistake I have made, it took over 4 hours to dry it, I 'babied" it too, kept moving it in the dryer to make sure it got dried overall. Then I put it on the bed and it was pulled in the corners and thought, oh great, saving a buck and see what it looks like.
Needed to get washed again, back to the dry cleaner and I don't know how they did it, but the "pulling" is gone and it almost looks like new again.

I washed my queen size down comforter in my washing machine one time. The washer shook and shook the entire time, and it took forever to dry. I would never do it again. I would take it to the cleaners and ask them to launder it.

I don't think it's a good idea. You will have to make a trip to a laundrymat to do this. Wouldn't risk either ruining your comforter or your washer. Or both.
I have a king comforter that is machine washable (I refuse to buy anything dry clean only. Yuck.)
I take it to the laundrymat twice, sometimes three times a year. Costs about $7 to put in the HUGE washers.
But first I wash the bedskirt in the washer. Because you never know what was in the washer before you. Someone's once a year cleaning bath mats? A dirty dog bed? Bleck!
So I sort of 'clean it out' with my bedskirt first, then my beautiful comforter goes in. I use cold water only.
I take it home and line dry it.
It's over 17 years old (Ralph Lauren Nanking) and the colors are still as sharp as the day I bought it. I feel like the heat of the dryer will fade it.

I dry clean our comforter. It's from Ethan Allen and has vibrant colors.
