Do you wash your pillows?

If you do, how often?

If not, how often do you replace them?

I'm washing and drying pillows from our RV today in preparation for closing it up for the season.

Usually I wash pillows twice and then they are too far gone to do again, so I will buy new only then.

Pillows have become so expensive!

Re: Washing Pillows or Toss?

i generally have only two brands of pillows.

one is the JOY pillow from hsn. they cannot be washed. i use a pillow cover and spot clean as needed.  i try to pick up a few anytime they are on a good sale so when they are "done" i have fresh ones to replace them.

the other pillows i use are from sleepgram. they can be machine washed as needed. i dont do it often though.

Re: Washing Pillows or Toss?

I buy pillows from Costco, they wash great. At least a couple of times a year. They have pillow protectors. I can’t imagine sleeping on a pillow and never washing it.

Re: Washing Pillows or Toss?

There's a Youtube channel called Clean That Up that posted a wonderful video this past week about how to clean and launder pillows. One of the tips was to spray with hydrogen peroxide to get rid of the yellowing.

How often I launder pillows varies, depending upon the pillow, how many pillow protectors and cases sheath it (I launder those weekly), how dirty it gets.

Our pillows last years with care, but every so often one needs to be replaced.

I never launder memory foam pillows, but I do keep them inside pillow protectors that I do launder regularly.

@AuntMame I love to watch Clean That Up videos!  Smiley Happy

To answer the OP's question, the pillows that allow me to sleep the best are cheap pillows from Costco.  And I do mean cheap.  A pack of two is around $20 when not on sale.  When one starts to go flat, I pitch it.  The package says they can be washed, but the one time I tried it, I ended up with a bunched up mess.  So I consider them disposable, and they're cheap enough, that they can be.

Re: Washing Pillows or Toss?

I've had MyPillow pillows for years and have washed them a lot. In fact, I just washed them again yesterday and they fluffed up wonderfully and are like brand new again! Love My Pillow!

Re: Washing Pillows or Toss?

I sleep on a latex pillow and it cannot be washed so I use a pillow protector cover and wash that with the rest of my bedding. Latex pillows are expensive but a good quality one will last 7 to 10 years.

Re: Washing Pillows or Toss?

I tried washing 2 pillows and they became so waterlogged and heavy that I had to stop the washing machine.  I won't try that again although obviously I'm doing something wrong.  We keep pillows until they are almost flat--several years for sure.  I use a pillow "protector" and a pillow case and I have seen pillows for reasonable prices, e.g, 2 for $30 or less.

Re: Washing Pillows or Toss?

[ Edited ]

I have several Northern Nights down pillows, still in great shape...some still like new as I only use them as spares, and decorative shammed pillows.

Have owned two different "My Pillows", which are synthetic. I've washed both and dried in dryer; both types fluffed up nicely (though the down gets drenched and takes much longer to dry, than the synthetic types.)

I don't wash them often...no set schedule, just occasionally, when I feel it's time to freshen them up.

I do use pillow protecters under my pillow cases.

I would never wash a pillow.
