I wonder if my functioning 40yo Maytag washer will be repairable when it breaks? Parts for it may not be available anymore.

Please when the time comes do not give up hope.

A knob broke on our stove.The knob would kick on the igniter and the gas. So there was no way to get the gas "flowing" without the knob. We had a repairman come out - he didn't help.

The stove was an older model because everyone was going with stainless steel appliances and I wanted almond colored. We had a tough time finding one that wasn't dented from sitting around.

After the knob broke, my husband tried the manufacturer and they no longer made parts for the stove. And no longer carried parts for the stove.

Well, good old husband was not deterred. He found a local appliance parts store. He took the broken knob to the store. They took all the information they needed. Then they went to "their contacts" and about a week later, they called and said they had a brand new knob.

So all 4 of the burners are working on our stove. So when the time comes PLEASE don't give up. I wish we had tried to get my 35+ year old Maytag repaired.

@drizzellla

I will try like h*ll to keep my Maytag washer running. If there's any possibility that a part could be interchangeable from another brand then I'll go for that. Sometimes when you're lucky you can find what works even if it's not OEM.

From what I have been reading and seeing speed queen washers are the best they make and last a long time and come with much longer warentys. There just expensive but well worth it.

I hope to replace my current Whirlpool with a Speed Queen when it dies....

Precisely. And look at the volume of this stuff going to trash!

We don't have luck with appliances. In the past 10 years of living in this house we've gone through 3 washing machines! I have an Electrolux washer now and its still chugging along after 3 years.

Within 10 years we've had a Kenmore that failed and cost too much to be fixed and after that an LG. Both were front loaders.  Spouse died and I refused to go to a laundromat.  Those days were over as far as I was concerned, so I swapped our freezer I was no longer needing for a Speed Queen top loader from a friend who wanted something more modern. Gulp...hope she doesn't want it back.
