I truly believe that appliance manufacturers deliberately make their products so that they don't last long. 'Job security'.

I had a repairman tell me a few years ago, longevity in appliances today wont happen, now built to last on avg. of 8 years.
My original Whirlpools lasted me 25 years for the washer and 32 for the electric dryer

This is precisely why I will not replace my current washer/dryer with units that have more bells and whistles. Knock on wood. I have had my combo for about 23 years and have only needed one repair on the washer, which was done years ago.
The brand is Whirlpool.

The more bells and whistles the more issues you will have.

I wish I had not replaced my 35+ year old Maytag washer. It developed a small leak. And I foolishly bought a new Whirlpool. With what I know now, I wish I had tried to have the Maytag fixed.
My Whirlpool supposedly has a sensor to figure out how much water the load needs. The sensor's opinion and Mine differ. I have pulled pants out of the washer after going through all the cycles, and the pant leg is completely dry. I now use the deep water wash for every load. And the Casual/Wrinkle Control setting is a joke. The clothes are so tightly twisted when the load is finished. You go to pull out one item and you end up with 6 shirts tightly wound around each other.
Whoever designed the new washers certainly has a different clientele in mind.
Wish it wasn't an appliance that I can't live without.

I wonder if my functioning 40yo Maytag washer will be repairable when it breaks? Parts for it may not be available anymore.

Speed Queen ... no other lasted as long for me.
Simple, no bells or whistle ... just reliability and clean clothes.

That is a good possibility. Mechanic already having trouble finding parts for my 21yr old Lexus SUV.
I know car vs appliance but with 3D printing you'd think anything could be made, guess not.

companies don't and won't pay for R&D anymore. too much money. they would rather fix in the field - more $$
that being said: our LG washer died. 16 years old. dryer was fine but we replaced both.
3 year in and so far so good. front loader.
very happy with the pair.

I'm 70yo and there's reason for me not to buy some expensive washer/dryer which I may not use very much from here on out. Time is running out and it's just me here so I will probably buy a mid-priced set and hope it lasts till I no longer need it. Cross that bridge when I get there.
