Yesterday, was talking to someone who is house shopping. They do not want even financial consideration to replace or add stuff like walkin tube, propane gas line, etc.

They just do not want the inconvenience.

I would never be patient enough to sit there and let the water drain enough to open the door and get out.

Or sit there naked waiting for it to fill...

@bonnielu  I think it would depend on how many more years you will stay in your current home.

If it is something you would like and will have good use for I say go for it.  Everything can be negotiated but it is right now which is all that counts  and it's for you.  So I would say yes do it  if your time line  is around four or 5 years to stay.

I held a realtor license for a minute or too.  There is a home for everyone and they all sell eventually.  It only takes "one" remember.

(I took out a wall to make an open concept type space in my 2 bedroom high rise  making it into a one bedroom)  Well on this last go around trying to sell it went in one day on the market. I  finally found  "the one'!  It was that something for everyone type of situation and they loved the open feel too. Never changed a thing.  Smiley Happy

Re: Walk in Tub and resale of homes

There is something called a transfer bench...we used one with my mother....it helped me help her in and out of her tub. If you have a big, deep tub and you want to soak in it, there are several ways to adapt it without changing the tub. You may want to do some research on that option. My neighbor put in a walk-in tub in her father's house so he could stay in his own home with a home health person....his big complain was sitting and shivering while the water drained....he hardly ever used it. Big expense with little payoff.

I am looking at doing a tub-to-shower conversion and am still wondering if it will lower our resale value.

Re: Walk in Tub and resale of homes

How about putting in a low tub & a grab bar? I recently remodeled my bathrooms. I had a very low tub put in the master bathroom. Down the road if need be I can always add a grab bar.My contractor recommended it & I love it.

I took the tub out of the hall bathroom & put in a walk in shower with a bench. This way we have an option to take a safe shower or a bath.

They want a brand new house built to their specs.

I would not want a walk in tub but want to convert one of my two bathtubs into a walk in shower. Stepping over the tub every day...not fun.

One of the things gaining in popularity is the wet room concept. Essentially, the whole bathroom is tiled, waterproof, and barrier-free. Floor drains remove the water and you just walk from the shower to the toilet to the sink. No shower walls, no glass doors, no step up or down to get into the shower. Everything is just one smooth, flat surface.

Re: Walk in Tub and resale of homes

I don't know if I'd buy a house with a walk-in tub.  The house would have to be 100% perfect in every other way for me to consider it.  It would not be something, I would keep.

I've sold 2 houses with walk-in showers and no bathtub.  I don't think having a bathtub is a deal breaker any longer for most families.
