I never liked the Mom and Pop stores because the goods were so overpriced. I shop at WM sometimes because frankly, I like saving money.
I prefer shopping at WM, Home Depot or Lowe's over any Mom and Pop stores - anyday!!
What's wrong with saving money?
Frankly, the media is to blame for the WM bad rap. If you don't want to work there, go elsewhere.

We are on a limited budget and have two Walmarts within 3 miles of our house (!) so yes, we shop there often. As far as wages, workers can get some experience and use that to either move up or move on. No problem with that!

I agree. I have never liked mom & pop stores because their prices are always higher and usually have such poor selection. Very few choices. I don't get why people are upset that they made it and are very rich now. Also if you don't like their politics don't support them and shop elsewhere. If people don't like the low wages they are free to work some place else. Just more of the ""poor me"" attitude with everyone else owing them something. This ""entitlement"" attitude is what is dragging our country down.

No. I simply don't have good experiences at WM, so I no longer bother to shop there.
I was looking for a pressure canner. Thought I'd try WM. Walked in and couldn't find anybody to ask for help. Finally found somebody and asked her about pressure canners.
"Pressure canners? What are they??" I explained what I needed. "Well, I never heard of such a thing!" All the while cracking her gum like it was cud.
Very long drawn-out sigh. "Well, I suppose I'll have to take you to the canning section!"
"Nope, never mind."
Turned around, walked out and went to a Mom & Pop store in town. Asked about pressure canners. "Sure, follow me!" I had some questions and she sat down with me right in the aisle, unpacked a pressure canner and took me right through the steps. While we were sitting there, another woman saw that we were looking at pressure canners, came over and sat down with us. The pressure canner was $5.00 more than at the WM. I bought it anyway; it was well worth it. And the woman who sat down with us? She bought one, too! As we were checking out, she told me that she had just come from WM and couldn't get any help there at all. I started laughing and said the same thing.
The last time, DH and I were at WM (about two years ago), we were standing in line to check out. The clerk had a nasty cold and she was snotting and sneezing all over the place. Coughing like crazy and not even trying to cover her cough. No tissues, nothing. She couldn't even speak right because of the cold. As she started to ring our things up, she LICKED HER FINGERS TO OPEN THE BAG! I refused to take the bags or pay for the items. Immediately went to CS and complained. "Well, there are supposed to be sponges at each check out." And that was it.
And that was certainly it for me. I have never stepped into a WM since. And it will snow completely around the equator before I ever do again. It's simply not worth it.

I worked at Walmart for a few months many years ago while I was between jobs. I was hired on making over $12 per hour (and while I would have liked more, realized it is what it is and knew it was not going to be my lifelong career), insurance was offered (I didn't need it as I use my hubby's), so that idea of minimum wages only is not true. Your job experience and work history play a part in that. I was hired in a floor management position, retail is not my cup of tea, so I did not stay long. There were things that I did not agree with in their policies (as with most companies), but hiring practices/wages is not one of them. I worked with many people who did not have many other options. I do shop there as I live in a smallish town with not a whole lot of options unless I want to drive an hour each way to shop. Sam Walton started small, worked his butt off and made it big, not everyone agrees with their practices, but it is the American way. I do like to find the best prices like most people and am not ashamed to say I do shop at Walmart. I also understand what people mean who say they ran other businesses out of town. People go where they can get better prices on most items. That is, IMHO, the downside of Walmart.

I don't shop at WM nor Target and it is my form of protesting their policies.
I don't have an issue with anyone being wealthy. My problem is that taxpayers are forced to subsidize their company. Most of their workforce are eligible for food stamps, subsidized housing, subsidized daycare, Headstart, etc.
WM often asks for property tax abatements when building a new store.
If you increased their wages to a decent living wage, shrinking their corporate profits but shrinking the population that lives off a government handout.

I find it so interesting that there are numerous threads started about how people feel about Walmart. Complaining about wages, how rich the owners are - the list goes on and on.
MANY other companies are just like Walmart but you never hear a word of complaint. How come? Disney for example. I worked there many years - got minimum wage and when I quit in 2000 I just broke the $6 per hour wage. The year before I quit, Eisner made $64 million AND he made all the animators take a pay cut. Iger made 43.7 million in 2014. Do you see numerous threads about how Disney still only pays minimum wage? Or how rich the CEO is?

I shop Walmart for items I find there , that are priced less than elsewhere. I don't have any per say "loyalty" to them. I do what helps my budget.
I guess I look at it, if the workers there didn't have Walmart - would they be able to find better pay /conditions elsewhere? I guess if they could , they would already be working elsewhere.

Yep, shop there at least once a week. Better the $$ in my pocket than anywhere else. One of the ways they keep their prices low by not allowing unions - go Walmart!! Thanks for the great prices I consistently find there!!!!

And Sam's Club, as I posted on other forum, I just purchased a bbq grill that was more than 50% off it's original selling price. I'm sure they aren't loosing money on that sale.
