WILLIAM FAULKNER'S APARTMENT IN NEW ORLEANS

I was beside myself when Veranda Magazine just published the interior of the French Quarter building that William Faulkner lived in, in 1925!

He leased part of it, and wrote some of his earliest works there.  Yes, THAT William Faulkner, Nobel Prize-winner, easily one of our most ground-breaking novelists, of "The Sound and the Fury",  "Light in August", "Sanctuary",  "The Hamlet",  "As I Lay Dying" and "Absalom, Absalom" fame.

The building, on Pirate's Alley, has been a residence, as well as a famous little bookstore and headquarters of the Faulkner Society, all at the same time.

This is the very literary-minded young couple who own the bookstore and live "over the shop" now, lucky ducks.

Sorry to keep gushing, but like most readers of fiction, I'm in awe of Faulkner and love gleaning little nuggets of his autobiography.  Given the chance, I'd almost be too diffident to live where he lived, myself, but this couple is intrepid!

The living room is romantic, yet there are cushy aspects, like the comfortably upholstered coffee table/bench.

Love this snug little dining room.

They can "afford" to have the ethereal sitting room, because they have this cozy, more laid-back library as their space for relaxing.  (I'm sorry the pictures are so cropped--  they were in a funny format that I couldn't just copy normally;  I had to "screen-shot" them and it cut off parts of the image!)

This attic-like children's bedroom also suffers from being cropped, so sorry.   But at least you can get a sense of the story book quality of it.  I would have loved a high-up, bookish retreat like this as a child!

The whole place is so "New Orleans"--  makes me nostalgic for the years that I lived there.  Fans of William Faulkner, the French Quarter, and/or traditional design can see the full, "un-cropped" images, simply by googling--   Tour the William Faulkner House in New Orleans .

Of course there's always been a strong French influence in N.O. and looking at these big windows, high ceilings and billowing curtains you could almost believe you were in a Paris apartment.
