My husband and I are giving inexpensive and practical gifts to each other for Christmas.  I would like a cordless but powerful vacuum.  He said to make clear to anyone who asks that I picked it out.

I don't think there is such a thing as a cordless but powerful vacuum.

LOL at what your husband said. Smiley LOL

I have had my Oreck for 19 years and never had a problem....love it. It is lite weight and very powerful. I paid $275 back then and it was a lot of money. Just thinking of how many $100 vacuums I would have purchased between now and then.

I just listed my 17 year old Miele upright for sale on CL today. Works great, but I wanted something smaller and cordless. Bought the Bissel Air Ram last month. So far, so good! I also have a central vac, which I haul out about once a week

Old vac had a large HEPA bag; did not need to be changed often. Had it tuned up yearly for $25-$30: new belt, HEPA filter, etc. A little sorry to see it go. It by far outlasted any and all previous vacuum cleaners, but I do not need 3 vacuums- even 3 good ones!

Air Ram is bagless.

@SilleeMee We used the same one growing up! I inherited it when I went to college. Mine weighed a ton to lug around. It worked great though. I have a Dyson and an early bagless EuroPro before they became Shark. I use both of them frequently in different areas of the house. I like the bagless because I don't have to buy the bags, and living in rural Georgia finding them can be hard.

@Teddie Shop-Vac does make one for a garage that hangs on the wall and has a nice long hose. You may want to check on one of them.

I bought that Kenmore right after college when I moved into my very first apartment. You're absolutely right, it weighed a ton. I lived on the second floor and I would haul it down to my car to vacuum out the carpet in my little Honda. The bags for it became really expensive and hard to find as you said. I found huge boxes of them at the local Sears warehouse store when they used to sell things in bulk. Seems like so long ago. @TigrissWoman Happy

Thank you, @Tigriss! We do have a shop-vac already but I will look into what you suggested.  : )

I highly recommend Miele.  They use disposable bags, which is my preference.  I feel like bagless vacuums just throw a lot of dust back into the air when they're emptied.  Miele bags aren't cheap, but I buy the generic bags through "Go Vacuum", and they work beautifully for a fraction of the cost.
