Re: Using your formal dining room & fine china

I have a dining table; wouldn't call it a dining room since the dining table shares space with my living area. I use it only when I'm having a larger number of people over, otherwise we eat in the kitchen. I do not have formal china. I do have nice dishes for everyday use that I also use when I have company.

Re: Using your formal dining room & fine china

I love my dining room!  We have lived in our home since 1968 but initially we had your typical LR, FR, Kitchen etc...Our children were very young at the time so we didn't consider a DR.  After they moved out & started their own families we realized a DR was definitely a necessity. We converted our FM into a dining room that is utter perfection, imo.  And as I have stated before somewhere, we now finally live in our living room!  I have never looked back and love it all!!

I no longer have a dining room. I have a long table that sits 6. I do have China but I've never used it. My father gave it to me as a wedding gift but I've never used it. It's a service for 12.

Re: Using your formal dining room & fine china

We had a formal dining room in our old house. NEVER used it for that. We made it into a wet bar and then we used that space all of the time. I was a silly bride 43 years ago and asked for a complete set of fine china, which I received. I've used it no more than 5 times in the past 43 years. A complete waste of money.

Re: Using your formal dining room & fine china

I host Christmas every year and use my dining room then.  Otherwise it goes unused.  I have fine china but many years ago when I started hosting Christmas my father bought me a set of Christmas dishes so I never end up using my china.  When my girls were little my dining and living rooms were their playroom.  When they were older the playroom was moved to the basement and the living room became an office and we furnished the dining room mainly becasue I received china as wedding gifts and wanted some place to store it.

Re: Using your formal dining room & fine china

Our dining room is very small so spouse and I eat our evening meal there most of the time (this time of the year, we eat 3 meals a day on our patio table). The table seats 6 and we leave the leaf in. We gave away our fine China last year when we were moving items in that room (getting new carpeting). We realized we hadn't used that china in 3 years, so gave it to my neighbor's granddaughter who was getting married and wanted some china. We don't miss it, as we use our "everyday" dishes all the time.

Re: Using your formal dining room & fine china

When the house was built, I wanted all the rooms to be used, so my kitchen and dinning room is all in one..........no separation.  I have three sets of dishes, Stengl (fruit pattern) for every day and two sets of fine china.  All three are from my family and passed down with wonderful memories.  My grandmother's silver service for twelve that even has ice tea spoons which I use very day.  I had custom made silver cloths inserts made for my drawers.  The trick to silver is to use it all the time, so polishing is not a chore.  Yes, I put all of it in the dishwasher!  I do not save anything for a special occasion.  I'll use the fine china on weekends and sometimes during the week when I want something pretty on my table.  I get a lot of pleasure from it's use.  I refuse to "save" it, if it breaks, it breaks.  As my husband always said:  Caskets do not come with drawers!

Re: Using your formal dining room & fine china

We use our dining room and china quite a bit because we entertain often (although not these days.)

My kitchen is one end of a great room, with the table between the kitchen end and the family room end.  The table is quite large and that's generally where we eat, although we sometimes eat at the counter.

I have a very open layout so all of these locations are easily seen from wherever you may be in the gathering areas of the house.

Re: Using your formal dining room & fine china

We have a formal dining, as far as I'm concerned it's a waste of space, it never gets used and wish the floor plan was different in this house so it could have been used for something else.

It's between the living room and kitchen so can't be closed off to make an office or sewing room out of it.

No fine china, no crystal or fancy flatware.  I never wanted any of that.
